African Diaspora Studies Major

The major in African Diaspora Studies requires earning 40 credits.  Students may choose among many courses to fulfill the major based on their individual interest, however it is recommended that students take AFDS 103 Introduction to African, African American, Diaspora Studies  and AFDS 201 Witnessing Contemporary African Society .  

AFDS will accept a WCI (Wheaton Credit for Internship)-approved internship for credit towards the Major or Minor. The proposed internship must be approved by the AFDS Coordinator and students must follow the appropriate steps to register for the WCI course. SIC 336 Practicum in Social Innovation  may also count towards the major with department chair approval.

Eight credits that focus on the continent of Africa

Four credit Capstone

Capstone projects may involve study abroad and/or independent study work. Please speak with the coordinator to discuss possible capstone projects. 

Eight credits at the 300-level

Twenty credits, four credits from each of the areas (A-E) below

Cross listed courses also count toward area requirements
