HIST 210 - African American History: 1877 to the Present

This course explores the meanings of freedom in African American history from the end of Reconstruction to the present. We consider key topics including the rise of segregation, northern migration, labor movements, the Harlem Renaissance, the long civil rights movement during the Cold War, black power, and mass incarceration. We will consider black politics, culture and identity from multiple perspectives as we explore intra-racial, class and gender dynamics. We will seek to understand African American history in relation to American history but will pay special attention to internationalist visions of black freedom.
