Asian Studies Minor

Minor Requirements


Asian Studies minors are required to take a minimum of 20 credits from the list of eligible courses below. At least one course must be at the 300-level or above. The study of an Asian language, though not required, is highly recommended. 

Courses not listed here, including courses taken through Brown University or study abroad programs, may be counted toward the minor with the permission of the Asian Studies Coordinator. 

Students pursuing the Asian Studies minor are strongly encouraged to develop a cohesive theme for their chosen courses in consultation with the Asian Studies Coordinator.

Foreign Language Study

Wheaton offers language courses in Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese. 

Students who wish to study other Asian languages have the option of cross-registering for courses at Brown University (with permission of the instructor and subject to the terms of Wheaton’s cross-registration rules). Asian languages offered at Brown include:

  • Hebrew (both Biblical and Modern)

  • Hindi-Urdu

  • Korean

  • Persian

  • Sanskrit

  • Turkish

  • Vietnamese

Wheaton College students may only take courses at Brown that are not offered at Wheaton. For more information, please see Cross Registration Options 

Study Abroad

Asian Studies minors and other students interested in Asia are also encouraged to consider study abroad in Asia and the Pacific, including via the Wheaton in Bhutan program. Destinations for study abroad in Asia and the Pacific include Australia, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong), Fiji, French Polynesia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, New Zealand, Samoa, South Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam. For information on currently available programs, please visit the Study Abroad Program Database at the Center for Global Education. Students who wish to pursue study abroad through programs not listed in the database should contact the Center for Global Education.

  • ENG 401 Senior Seminar  * This senior seminar is required to be offered as “Asia in Translation: East and Southeast Asia and the Idea of World Literature”
