PHIL 298 - Classical Chinese Philosophy

This course will explore classical Chinese philosophy and its significance for us. Our central questions will include: Are human beings naturally disposed to be good or self-interested? Do we have stronger obligations to our family, friends, and community, or must we show impartial concern for everyone? What is the relationship between Confucian and Western feminisms of care? Should the government motivate people to act rightly through moral cultivation or rewards and punishments? Is morality an artificial construct that hinders our authenticity and personal freedom? We will discuss these and other issues through reading classical Chinese authors such as Confucius, Mozi, Mencius, Laozi, Shang Yang, Shen Dao, Xunzi, Zhuangzi, and Han Feizi, and recent philosophical writings.
