German Studies Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

In this major students pursue interdisciplinary studies in a number of fields that relate directly to German; it does not require as much proficiency in the language as does our German major. Students construct their own program of 10 courses: six within the German Department and, with departmental approval, four in other disciplines.

Major requirements

The major in German Studies consists of a minimum of 10 credits.  Of these, 2 must be at the 300-level or higher.

Course Requirements

German Department

  • At least FIVE courses within the German Department.  Of these, at least TWO must be at or above the 300-level
  • AND Senior Seminar GER 401

Any Department

  • Up to FOUR courses from other Departments, selected in consultation with the German Department advisor

If a First Year Experience is offered by the German Department, it may be counted toward the major.  Students are also encouraged to pursue double majors with other programs, such as Business/Management, International Relations or History.
