Economics Major

Minimum credits required: 44

Prospective majors should consult with the department chair early in their academic career. To major in Economics, students must maintain a grade-point average of C or higher. The department recommends that students complete ECON 101 and ECON 102 or ECON 103 (in either order) and MATH 101 first. Students considering graduate study also should complete extensive coursework in mathematics.

Major requirements

Required core and intermediate courses - 16 credits

Four credit math course

Choose one from the following:

MATH 101 - Calculus I
MATH 104 - Calculus II
MATH 236 - Multivariable Calculus
Additional MATH courses can be approved by the Economics Department

Four credit statistics course

Choose one from the following:

MATH 151 - Introduction to Data Science
MATH 141 - Introductory Statistics
Or a statistics course approved by the Economics Department

Sixteen additional credits chosen from the following:

At least eight credits must be at the 300 level

Courses used to fulfill major requirements may not be taken pass/fail either at Wheaton or elsewhere. An overall average of C in all courses is necessary for completion of the major.
