FYE 101 - Racial Justice and the Arts Small slights and slips of the tongue happen in conversation, and often can be perceived as instances of unconscious bias or even racism in our everyday encounters. Perhaps even more offensive are the harmful stereotypes we witness in public spaces—online, on TV, on public transit, in sports and entertainment, the arts, and so forth. The stress takes a toll on the person or persons being targeted, sometimes fatally. Importantly, both unconscious bias and overt racism ruin relationships and threaten our democracy. In this FYE, group participants will use Claudia Rankine’s Citizen to open up room for reflection, critical analysis, and artistic expression that imagine new ways for moving forward as citizens of the United States.
