FR 329 - French Chanson from Roland to Rap Fiercely defended, hotly debated: popular song in France is a touchstone of national identity. We’ll consider it as an expression and reflection of French cultures, and contend with questions such as “What makes a song French?” Successful students will end the semester more familiar with the “chanson” tradition and a deeper appreciation of the language and themes that nourish it. Readings, listening, films, discussion, exposés, and two papers.
