FYE 101 - Food for Thought: Food and Our Planet

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: THE CULTURE, LANGUAGE AND SUSTAINABILITY OF WHAT WE EAT: This FYE will center around the topic of food–specifically the building and execution of rituals with/around food, writing about food, examination how society influences the food that we eat, and how our food choices affect the environment. This FYE will be taught in four sections led respectively by a biologist, an English professor and poet, a sociologist, and a Religion professor and rabbi. Sometimes we will meet together, sometimes separately in sections.

FOOD AND OUR PLANET: As we quickly approach 8 billion people on Earth, our need for food is one of the biggest threats our planet faces. Food production, distribution, management and waste have major impacts on Earth’s life support systems and the millions of other species who share our home. This portion of the FYE will explore how our current industrialized food systems contribute to climate change and biodiversity loss. We will then dive into diverse solutions to these issues, and learn from case studies where people have figured out how to produce food in sustainable and ecologically conscious ways. Along the way we will visit different types of farms and natural areas, and hear from a range of voices about how we can make a difference for the future of life on Earth
