This course will examine the depictions of women’s bodies in Italian literature and culture from the 15ththrough 18th centuries.  We will identify the common motifs and stereotypes that defined the female body in a variety of genres including poetry, prose, art, film and theater.  Further, we will explore how these themes reflected the societal and historical trends of the period.  This course will also investigate how the female form is both a manifestation of and a vehicle for the feminine creative experience. Readings will include Giovanni Boccaccio, Torquato Tasso, Vittoria Colonna, and Tullia D’Aragona.
