SOC 398 - Latino Community Latino Community In this course we will take three unique sociological points of view in examining the various Latino communities in the United States and, to a lesser extent, their countries of origin. These three perspectives are (1) the structural, (2) the cultural, and (3) the historical. In particular, we will consider those communities of persons, living in the United States, who are of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican descent but will also pay some attention to Salvadorians, Guatemalans, Venzuelans, and Panamanians. Several issues that are unique to these populations will be considered. These include self/identity, culture (normative and esthetic) and multiculturalism, bilingualism, the immigrant experience, transnationalism and globalization, family life, the church, education, political participation, demographics, music, popular culture, and literature and storytelling.
