HIST 331 - Social and Intellectual History of the United States to the Civil War The evolution of American society from the colonial period to the Civil War and how various Americans attempted to describe, explain or alter the world in which they lived. Readings will come from primary sources, such as Franklin, Paine, Douglass, Emerson and Thoreau, as well as works of contemporary social history.
