BIO 398 - Genes Genomes & Genomics


This is an advanced course focused on the relatively new and cutting-edge discipline of genomics. A range of topics in genome biology will be covered falling under three central themes: (1) how advances in genomics has resulted in a new understanding of genes; (2) a detailed exploration of the anatomy, structure, and function of genomes; and (3) how genomic analyses can provide unique insights into some of the most pressing issues in modern biology. Wide ranging topics will include the basics of Next Generation and Third generation DNA sequencing technologies, new model for defining genes, genome structure and function, comparative genomics, functional genomics, genomic medicine, and evolutionary and ecological genomics. Three hours of lecture and three hours of lab per week.
