HIST 121 - U.S. History Survey from 1877 to the Present


 This course explores the construction of American identity and global power during the long American century. Topics include the afterlives of slavery, reconstruction, populism, Jim Crow and the Progressive era, the Wilsonian moment, immigration history, the New Deal order, the Cold War, McCarthyism, the long civil rights movement, the rise of conservatism, deregulation and neoliberalism. We will pay special attention to foreign policy, the history of capitalism and the development of an American global hegemony and consider how inequality, race, class and gender affect American citizenship and democracy.
