WGS 343 - British Modernism

This course will look at the rise and development of British Modernism in the early twentieth century. It will focus on literature that responds to the radical changes in the late 19th and early 20th century – industrialization, urbanization, colonization, mass culture, the emerging women’s movement, and the developing scientific, psychological, and economic studies of humanity. We will study writers searching for new ways to represent and explore human subjectivity, ways that modified or overturned existing modes of representation by pushing them to the abstract or the introspective. We will read works by authors such as Joyce, Conrad, Bowen, Woolf, Yeats, Eliot, Forster, Mansfield, and Beckett.
