ART 220 - Painting I

This course is an introduction to oil painting. We will begin by focusing on the material qualities of oil paint (color, texture, body) in order to develop a personal painting practice. Our approach will follow some conventions of representation through still life, portraiture, the figure, and landscape. Painting is about looking at and engaging with the world through material and form. Our goal is to develop a language of our own and use the material to represent our experience of that which is outside of ourselves, as well as our internal emotional landscape. We will also touch on ideas around abstraction and its potential. Can painting tell us something about what we can say, what we can see, and how we feel?
