ITAS 298 - Transnational Italy This course examines the interplay between national and transnational identities in the Italian diaspora, in the experiences of migrants to Italy and in the perspectives of writers who live between Italy and other countries. The course focuses on contemporary narratives of mobility, displacement and belonging as they pertain to language, translation and self-translation; colonialism; race; gender; customs; and religion. We study writers and artists who challenge fixed notions of Italian identity and stretch our understanding of Italy beyond national and linguistic borders, such as: Jhumpa Lahiri, Amara Lakhous, Gianna Patriarca, Flavio Lucchesi and graphic novelist, Takoua Ben Mohamed. The course is conducted in Italian; some readings will be in English.
