FR 298 - French for Healthcare

With the unprecedented COVID-19 world health crisis, we have just lived through, navigating and understanding health care from a multicultural, multilingual viewpoint is a critical skill needed for anyone wanted to work, help and understand healthcare in the French language.Linguistic and cultural barriers often create obstacles when it comes to efficient communication between medical professionals and their patients. This course provides the necessary vocabulary, writing and oral communicative tools for students who are interested in or plan to enter the medical profession, work with French-speaking patients, or volunteer in a francophone country in a medical setting. Students will have the opportunity not only to advance their fundamental oral and written language skills, but also their understanding of the central roles language and culture play in assuring communication across disciplines. Through various activities, student will carry out the daily actions of their medical work in French: consultation, the hospital world, role- plays, writing a prescription, graphic analysis, real life scenarios with digital audio and videos. We will explore the nuances of the French and francophone healthcare and medical field with a focus on the need to be culturally and linguistically sensitive to differences in the francophone world.
