PSY 298 - Queer & Trans Psychology & Health

This course will explore topics of public health and psychology among queer and trans people, including those who are two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sexuality- and gender-expansive (2SLGBTQIA+). Following an introduction to the rich diversity of 2SLGBTQIA+ populations, we will explore the theories and methods of knowledge production—both scholarly and community-driven—around 2SLGBTQIA+ health and psychology. We will discuss important issues currently facing 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in the United States, such as gender-affirming care, mental health and substance use, sexual and reproductive health, chronic disease and aging, healthcare access, and social and cultural belonging. Throughout the course, students will develop the necessary skills to critically evaluate and imagine future directions for the fields of public health and psychology of 2SLGBTQIA+ populations.
