ENG 214 - Slave Narratives In this course we examine the corpus of literary and historical texts known as the slave narratives. As some of the earliest literary texts by African Diasporic peoples, the slave narratives underpin the development of a Black Atlantic literary tradition, while providing firsthand historical accounts of the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Throughout the semester, we will read several slave narratives and analyze their significance with respect to African American literature, Caribbean literature, and the literature of abolition. We will also watch and discuss notable films based upon or inspired by slave narratives.
