ENG 211 - Hip Hop, Spoken Word, and Black Poetics Hip Hop, Spoken Word, and Black Poetics leads students on a journey through the evolution of hip hop, spoken word and performance poetry from the 1970s to the present. Our primary aim is to understand Black literary aesthetics as conveyed through poetic genres of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. We will also concern ourselves with the manner in which the Black poetic tradition both engages and challenges Western literary values in content and in structure.
