FNMS 325 - Transmedia Franchises Transmedia storytelling—a narrative or universe that unfolds across multiple platforms—seems very modern. However, this course will examine the longer history of transmedia franchising through a series of case studies that will range from Star Wars to Veronica Mars and the Marvel universe. Our exploration will take us down still-emerging paths in media studies, and will also allow us to discuss key issues in media history: how producers have historically dealt with fan cultures, the influence of video games and new media on Hollywood, how storytelling conventions change across media, and the ever-shifting power dynamic among fans, artists, industry professionals, and stars.
