RUSS 281 - Russian Arts and Culture

Russian art, primarily but not solely painting. We cover medieval icons, traditional folk wooden architecture; the new Westernization of the 18th century. Realism and socially engaged nineteenth century canvases; Soviet political propaganda and monumental art and unofficial dissident art. May include a quick look at ballet and music. Special attention will focus on the exceptional period of the Russian Avant-Garde, 1900-1920s.
