ARTH 300 - Art and Race: Africa in Modern France

This seminar examines how a fascination with African visual cultures motivated several artists and designers working in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century France. Modern art in France was profoundly shaped by a series of direct visual appropriations from African makers, embedded in a system of Eurocentric beliefs about racial difference. We consider this African-inspired history in the context of colonialism and imperialism.
