DMC 398 - Media Audiences

This course introduces students to the core concepts and ideas related to media audiences, defining audiences not as passive spectators, but rather as people participating in the reception and production of media. We look at media audiences across various spaces, such as transmedia, hybrid genres, global and local audiences, and across various identity positions as viewers, readers, listeners, producers, participants, and activists. Though specific areas of focus will vary from year to year, students will engage topics such as fandoms, meme culture, political activism, and citizen journalism.
